Monday 18th October

Today we did some more filming of the love connotations. We bought some fairy cakes and spelt love across them, with one letter on each cake. We spelt it with the pink icing.
We also made a paper chain couple and drew faces and hearts on them with pen and icing, then took shots for the purpose of match cuts. We then uploaded all of the pictures and started to edit them using photoshop.

we also discussed a schedule for during the half term holidays, as we plan to get the majority of our filming completed ready for editing when we come back.

Filming

Monday 11th October:
Today we started filming some stop-motion effects. We bought some love heart sweets to write the lyrics of the song with. We also made a love heart shape with them and made the heart break into two. We also uploaded the animatic story board onto the blog.

Thursday 14th October:
Today we did some more stop-motion filming of more lyrics from the song we decided we wanted to use. We also wrote out the sentence "and the love kickstarts again..." onto paper and took pictures letter by letter. W e also continued to film with the love heart sweets, focusing on the words on the sweets for example "love bug" and "i love you", we made these spin and move across the camera. Later we can edit the footage and make them move across the screen using stop motion.

Music Video Analysis

Music Video Analysis

The Ting Tings – ‘ shut up and let me go

Technical aspects of the video

There are a variety of different shots used in the video but the main shots that are used are close ups to show the performers singing or medium shots to show the performance aspect of the video. There are low camera angle shots used to show the performance aspect of the video as he is on the floor, but also there is high camera angles used to show the fighting performance that takes place in the video. The most effective camera movement that is used is the transition in and out of the hands, this is very effective as the hands lead onto a different variety of shots.

The editing of the video is very effective as match cuts are used to get the effect of the transition of the hands into various shots. The background of the set has been edited, possibly green screen has been used, to move to the beat. Colour filters have also been used to give shots different effects to them. Lip-synching has been used as there are performance aspects in the video.

The costume used in the video is very casual, it reflects the music style which is pop/indie music. The location of the video is set in a studio, green screen has possibly been used to create the movement in the background. There is performance used in the video and this is a fighting scene that fits with the lyrics of the song, “shut up and let me go…”. The performance flows with the beat of the music and doesn’t look out of place. Bright white lights from above light the set to give a clear and bright set which is visually exciting.

Narrative/Genre aspects

This song and music video is typical of an alternative pop song because it consists of an uncontrolled dance-orientated beat. The video shows an indie pop duo (singer and drummer), which is part of the performance. It is an illustrative narrative because the footage helps tell the story of the song of the couple fighting. The song also involves disjuncture when the performers create different shapes, using hand gestures, which then transition from scene to scene. The video switches between performance and narrative. We see Katie (singer) lip syncing all the way through and also a drum in the background, which carries the main beat. The balance of the narrative and performance is consistently equal throughout the video as she lip syncs during the narrative.

Overall we think that the most effective technical aspect of the video is the transition of the hand gestures from one scene to another. We want to incorporate this in our video but instead of random shapes we will use hearts to continue our theme of love.
